Corten steel, also called Cor-Ten steel, is an enduring steel that fights corrosion but is not rust-proof. In landscaping and other outdoor applications Corten steel alloy is extensively used as it forms a protecting layer of rust after six months approx. of exposure to moisture and oxygen. Meanwhile the rust layer (patina) guards the steel from additional corrosion, it does not require painting or additional weatherproofing.
It is significant to note that, to form this shield, weathering steel needs exposure to wet-dry cycles. It will not form the protective rust layer, if the Corten steel is immersed in water or suppressed in wet grounds. It may also prevent the protective layer from forming in time to protect the underlying steel because of Exposure to marine environments or areas close to the ocean.
